I’m Garth Mackway-Wilson, an experienced freelance proofreader and copy-editor with English as my first language. After achieving my Cambridge A-level certificate, I completed a BSc (Eng) and a Masters in Business Leadership.
Over the years, I’ve worked across multiple industries, including as a Project Manager, and later as a Senior Standards Writer for a national standards organisation for over a decade. Before providing a quote,
I will need the following information:
I need to see a sample of the file before giving you a firm quote, but I can provide a ballpark estimate based on the above if you don’t want to send a sample until you know I am available.
I manage all work as projects, which means the schedule will also have deadlines for responses from you. I will report back to you on a regular basis regarding progress (on project durations longer than one month).

- What level of service you want (If you are unsure, let’s discuss it. I prefer to know your expectations before starting out)
- Details about the work: for example, is it a novel, a PhD thesis or an annual report?
- Schedule, both of when you will send the work and when you need it back
What types of projects will you accept?
Nonfiction writing, Christian books, business or technical drafts. I might accept academic research papers, and self-help or motivational work after checking a sample.
What types of projects will you NOT accept?
I do NOT edit fiction writing, stories, resumes, job applications, grant proposals, essays, any work that is to be graded, cookbooks, or recipes.
In what format do you work?
I can proofread and edit any work as long as it is in electronic format. I edit in MS Word, but can accept Google Docs.
What happens if word count is increased while the edit is underway?
Scope creep is always a potential problem and I will negotiate the impact on cost and delivery time with you.
Do you check for plagiarism?
No, I offer comprehensive and accurate proofreading and editing of work that has already been written and (preferably) fact-checked.
I have a large document. Can I request a custom quote?
Yes. I work on documents of any length, but I need to check if the word count and desired delivery date for large documents can be accommodated into my job scheduling.
Do you add information or alter my document at all?
No. I proofread and copy edit your work, checking for and correcting typos, spelling, grammar, tense, clarity, sentence structure, and readability. All changes are marked in the MS Word “Track changes” function, and you can accept or reject every change. Verification of citations or quoted sources (if required) will be quoted separately since it is very time-consuming.
Do you outsource your work?
I will not outsource any work without prior (written) permission from you.
In what format do you work?
I can proofread and edit any work as long as it is in electronic format. I edit in MS Word, but can accept Google Docs.

Can you guarantee 100% confidentiality?
Yes. I prefer to work with direct emails, but can use Sync or Dropbox. However, any cloud-based service is liable to be hacked, and I can obviously not be held responsible in that case.
Can you do a rush order?
This depends on my current work load. Please note that my time zone is UTC+2, and I am not available 24/7. However, if you need a rush job, please contact me. If I’m available, I’ll make a custom offer for you.
